Anyone else with home charger regrets?

Mostly I'm after a bit of cameraderie!

Back in 2020 when we decided we were getting an EV (used 2016 Nissan Leaf) I did a ton of research into home chargers / EVSEs. Our criteria were that it had to:

  • look decent on the wall (sorry Zappi, that rules you out)

  • support "top up" solar charging and Octopus Go tariffs

  • not cost an absolute fortune - we were willing to pay a reasonable amount but not over the odds for no additional features

We settled on the EO Smarthome charger from EO Charging - in fact, there was a deal on via Octopus energy so we got it for slightly less than I was expecting. Hurray!

Then the problems started.

First, the sales team over-promised and under-delivered - "oh, we can definitely fit a small consumer unit for your garage supply" translated into a bewildered expression from the installer, a phone call to his manager and a mumbled "I'll see what I can find on the van..."

Second, the installer had never done an installation with solar monitoring, and hadn't been supplied with the correct CT clamps. Months later I finally got someone to come out and replace them when I demonstrated that the system was claiming my 3.68kw array was generating over 10kw.

Third, the app is atrocious. It's technically smart in the same way Carling is technically beer. I checked recently and there's a new app, but it's only for newer chargers. I look longingly at the lovely graphs from myEnergi, Tesla and Hypervolt, while I'm stuck with an ugly white screen which, when it finally gets round to updating, simply lists the readings from the CT clamps and says "CHARGING".

The real kick in the teeth is that my Octopus Energy branded charger isn't actually smart enough to use the Octopus Energy smart charger tariff.

I've been very tempted to replace the thing a few times, but it's just useful enough that I can't really justify the outlay.

Anyone else have any tales of woe/buyer's remorse?
