Before you buy an EV (or heat pump)

Before you buy an EV (or heat pump) you need to check the following. First if your houses is feed by an overhead cable is it "looped" from another property, or it come from a common transformer (maybe on a pole or another property). If so it must be "de-looped" by the local electric company (the DNO). This is normally at no cost BUT in many areas the DNOs are quoting 6months to 3 years to do this work!! Also it is illegal to lay cables across the pavement (1980 Highways Act) and is banned by many local councils. Also were someone to be hurt or injured your car insurance and or household insurance may not pay damages, so ALL costs would fall on you. In addition car chargers must be MORE than 2 meters away form the public highway or planning permission is required. (listed buildings at any distance planning is required). There are some systems that may allow you to get special cable paths cut into the pavement, (Oxford are looking at this) BUT they typically cost £1000 to install, (just the cable route) and maybe subject to planning. In addition there are now some small village locations (Norfolk and Suffolk) that have been told by the DNO that NO car charges or heat pumps will be allowed! (The DNO has the final say there is no appeal). The problem is that the single feed cable to the village is to small and will need to be changed. This cost will fall on the residents NOT the DNO, costs could be tens or hundreds of thousands of pounds. Also if your property is older normally pre war your company fuse may only 60A, normally the DNO will change it for 80A. BUT there are cases where the cable is not big enough and they will not change the fuse, so you may NOT have a car charger! (or heat pump). The cost of changing the cable would fall on you NOT the DNO. From family experience ask the DNO, ask local installing electrical companies, local council (in writing).
