Commando plug sockets (up to 32 amps 7kWh) instead of smart chargers on your drive.

Related to another thread where a city based? street charging issue is being discussed from a non ev owner..

Recently new estate building groups lobbied government that they should not install EV chargers to their builds (the easiest & cheapest way is to do it from new when you have the tradesmen in anyway in theory)

I can guess why commando plug sockets are not getting a look in (because the previous govt wanted it all "smart" so they IF needed could throttle back power in times of grid stress mainly.

But, commando plugs using the same lay of SWA cable, set the course for an install that can save hundreds on a regular fit out in prep for EV.

If we go back to the early days of UK bev driving, the nissan leaf, even back in 2011 had the ability to charge via the car timer on the dash, and also had a general use app, so it was / is in itself smart technology.

A commando plug could help out as a middle ground, if it has all been lobbied against primarily on cost, because the options, whilst still labour heavy (all installs are) would all but wipe out the cost of buying in a smart ev charger for a home that may be years from getting an ev.

The commando plug is useful for powering motorhomes, caravans, builders site tools & more, & they are cheap boxes at the end of run of SWA at the end of a driveway or a shorter run of upgraded cable where the fuse board is located, sharing the same requirement for safety elsewhere in a fit.

As an option to some commando granny chargers they have a built in delay timer, but realistically you can start & stop charging from your BEV app, or set that delay in car as is.

We get too fixated on the grant based (hit & miss) chargers when in fact we could save the money, or plan to do a slow upgrade at a later time whilst providing charging on the cheap, the semi smart commando charger accessory can also have ampage changed accordingly, most owners if advised of problems would be happy to trickle charge compared to no charge at all, for a few hours or overnight on the odd occasion.

Please do the research, here is a non affiliated link that has a lot of the detail laid out with its own links for current kit prices for a viable alternative with a good savings potential.
