Just a thought regarding the HMRC decision, which while disappointing, is not entirely unreasonable. I’m probably being naive to the technical difficulties here, but would there be a way to directly match the electricity a member takes from the grid to the electricity their share adds to the grid at that particular time slot? Perhaps when using “your own” electricity it could be deducted directly before billing rather than paid as a benefit.
If that was possible I wonder would it be an easier sell to HMRC to get at least a portion of their benefit tax free, and it would be an incentive for members to use more of their electricity at times when the grid is likely to be greener.
I hope that makes sense and would be grateful for the thoughts of others. Realise that it is only those earning above particular tax thresholds that would be affected in any case.
